How to make your own Vermicomposter
or... build a worm bin
Materials
- One large tote bin with removable lid (I used Rubbermaid's 53L tote)
- One boot tray to fit under the tote
- 1/2" ID CPVC Pipe, length determined by the following: width of tote (where the pipe will be) + 3/4" to 1" (19 to 25mm), times two
- Four CPVC end caps to fit 1/2" ID CPVC pipe -see picture
Tools required:
- Drill
- Bits:
- 5/8" spade bit
- 1/4"
- 1/8"
- 3/32"
- 1/16"
- Sandpaper (medium fine, doesn't really matter)
- measuring tape (optional)
How it's done
- Drill 5/8" holes 2" from bottom on sides, 2 on each side, for the pipe to go through (see picture)
- Cut pipe to about 3/4" longer than width of bin, from hole to hole
- Drill 1/4" holes through pipe at regular intervals, alternating at 90° from one to next
- Sand ends of pipe so it fits through the holes in the bin
- Drill 1/8" holes in lid (about two dozen) and around 2" from top of bin (I did 5 on each side, 3 on each end) (see picture) for ventilation
- Drill several 1/16" holes in bottom of bin for drainage (see picture)
- Drill 3/32" holes in end caps (4 or 5) -easiest to drill from inside, angled outward (see picture)
- Put pipes through 5/8" holes, put end caps on pipes (see picture), put bucket on tray.
Badaboom badabing. See picture
